Spicy Turkey Chili Frito Pie Recipe

Spicy Turkey Chili Frito Pie Recipe

I saw the traditional recipe for mexican chili frito pie for the first time while watching Food Network a few years ago. I never cooked chili but I love to make chicken tortilla soup and the similarity in the two recipes inspired me to create my own chili pie recipe. This is my go-to chili recipe now.

Adding the smokiness of the spanish paprika and smoked black pepper mixed with the chipotle tabasco sauce and the fish sauce creates layers of flavor that I’ve never tasted in any other chili recipe. If you don’t usually cook with fish sauce I have to warn you that it is very strong and a little bit goes a very, very long way. I linked to all of the things that I use in my chili recipe so that you can see what I am using.

Chili Beans, Great Northern Beans and Kidney Beans

Chili Ingredients

1 1/2 lb. ground turkey
1 can dark red kidney beans

1 can great northern beans
1 can chili beans
1 can petite diced tomatoes
2 diced medium yellow onions
1/2 diced green bell pepper
1 whole diced jalapeno
4 finely chopped cloves of garlic
1 smashed whole clove of garlic
1 1/2 tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro
2 tbsp. salt
2 tbsp. pepper
2 tsp. chili powder
1 tbsp. ancho chilli powder
1 tsp. cayenne pepper
1 tbsp. chipotle chili pepper flakes
1/2 tbsp. red pepper flakes
1 tbsp. cumin
1 tbsp spanish smoked paprika
1 tbsp. sriracha sauce
1 tbsp. chipotle tabasco sauce
2 tsp. fish sauce
2 tbsp. butter
1/3 cup crushed corn chips
1/3 cup shredded mexican cheese

Remember to season the food as you cook. Don’t just throw everything in the pot and mix it together. When you cook the turkey, season it. After you pour all the beans in the pot, season them! When you think it is finished and you have all the ingredients together taste it again to be sure you don’t need to add a little more salt or pepper.

Garnish Ingredients

sour cream
cilantro
chopped green onions
corn chips
Queso fresco and pepitas are also good choices to garnish this spicy chili

Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a pan and add the chopped garlic, onions, bell pepper and ground turkey. Season the turkey well with salt and pepper then add the red pepper flakes, ancho chili powder and cayenne pepper.

Cook until the turkey is browned. Be sure to stir regularly so that the garlic doesn’t burn or stick.

While the turkey is browning combine the canned beans and tomatoes in a large pot over medium heat. Do not strain the cans, just pour them straight into the pot.

Next you’ll add the jalapeno and smashed clove of garlic. I use a whole diced jalapeno and the recipe is really spicy. If you want to cut back on the heat remove the seeds and the white part inside of the jalapeno before you dice it.

Smash the garlic clove by placing the broad side of your knife on top of it and hitting the knife with your palm a few

times.

Add the remaining spices, the sauces, butter and crushed corn chips.

Once the turkey is cooked add it to the pot with the beans. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Remove the pot from the heat and mix in the cheese and cilantro.

This is my healthier version of Mexican chili Frito pie. I use ground turkey, fat free sour cream and add more beans and peppers to make a tasty alternative to the traditional recipe that is usually served in a little bag of Fritos corn chips.

  6. Remove the pot from the heat and mix in the cheese and cilantro.
  7. To make a chili pie, first add a layer of corn chips to the bottom of a bowl. I like to use Trader Joes organic corn chip dippers because they taste great and they hold up to the chili well because they're thicker cut chips for dipping but the authentic recipe was actually made in a little snack-sized bag of original Fritos corn chips.
